Traditional vs. Home Based Businesses

Traditional Business

A traditional business is setup with a store-front or an office where clients/customers can visit you to buy your products and/or services. Depending on the type of business, the costs can be anywhere from $50,000 to $250,000 in startup costs. There are some franchises, like McDonald’s, that have a $45,000 franchise fee. But they also require you to have $750,000 in liquid capital. With this franchise you still need to spend from $900k to $2 million in getting the location, hiring staff, building the store, and stocking product to make what you sell. After the startup costs, you have monthly rent, salaries, inventory purchases and other expenses.

Home Based Business

A home-based business means you work from home. You rarely have customers/prospects visit you at home for meetings or to buy products. This type of business is not limited to Network Marketing opportunities. It also includes you selling products you make, or source from a manufacturer, and sell on the Internet. Etsy, Shopify, Google, Amazon and many other web hosting providers can get your products in front of buyers and help you sell those products. A home-based business can also include consulting services that you can do from home and generate income with very little overhead. These businesses can cost you around $2,000 for startup costs (web hosting, setup costs, business licenses, brand development). Then they have marketing/sales costs that either take many hours of your time, or cost you between $1,000 – $5,000 per month.

Network Marketing businesses provide you with a web site that is customized to you. All purchases are credited to you for commissions and bonuses. It includes all licensing, overhead production costs, web site and marketing tools. As I said earlier, this business model can startup for as little as $80 and cost you as little as $80-$150/mo. All you do is the prospecting, marketing and sales. The beauty of this model is that industry experts like Eric Worre, Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, myself, and many others can teach you how to be effective at marketing without feeling like you are selling. No one likes the feeling they are pushing products onto others.
